Stain on plaster ceiling and walls
I noticed about a year ago in the walls leading to my basement a slight yellow stain going down the wall, it progressed to all three walls going down the walls in streaks and has remained that. I noticed today in my living room a small yellow stain as well on the ceiling. Now I went in the attic and do not see any water damage. I moved in the house 4 yrs ago and painted the ceiling and walls that I am talking about. Now I know the previous owners had a leak and had the whole roof replaced seven or eight yrs ago. Is it possible for a previous water leak to bleed through 4 yrs later if no stain primer was used?

It might not be from the previous water leak. Moisture could be entering from somewhere else. Are all the stains on the same side of the house? Are the rain gutters in good shape on that side?
Do you have steam heat? Did it just happen when you started to use the boiler this year?

To answer your question, yes it is possible for a stain to bleed through even years later if no action was taken to block it.you may solve your problem just by properly priming then painting.I'm not saying it isn't some leak issue as the previous post stated but yes it could be a primer issue.
Also this is obviously an older home so besides leakage it could be condensation or other moisture besides an actual leak.

I would add that latex stain blocking primers do a poor job of sealing stains - they either don't seal the stain at all or it's temporary and the stain bleeds thru later. It's always best to use a solvent based primer when sealing water stains!
Is the plaster still solid where the stains are?
