drywall patch over block wall??

The previous owners of this house did some very creative home "improvements". The photo below is from our main bathroom. I'd like to fill the hole so that I can paint over it. They had cut a groove in the drywall and run a wire to a lighting fixture. The drywall is directly over block. I realize this is not ideal, but don't really want to change it at this point. I'm trying to figure out the best way to patch it up. Should I cut the whole thing out and patch? Do I need to glue the drywall to the block? What kind of adhesive should I use? An easier way might be to just cut out the area where the fixture was attached to clean up edges and then just fill the "trench" with mud.

Any other suggestions?

What say you?

I don't do Facebook. Is there a way to post it on a sight such as photobucket.com?
