Help needed for repair of Stucco ceiling please

I had to cut out to small square holes to access the ceiling area for pot light install. I can now put the cut out squares back in place. Question is how do I go about taping the patch's in order to mud it? Do I scrape off the stucco around the repair in order to have a smooth area to apply tape? Or is it best to just mud it and spray some stucco for one of those cans for small repairs. The are I'm dealing with are two spots a little larger than a fist.

thanks

Yes, you need to scrape off the surrounding texture so you can tape and mud.

Stucco is a masonry product, do you have popcorn texture? knock down?

It's a fairly dense popcorn stucco. I was wonderong if I could get away with using Durabond 90 and dab it instead of taping, then using one of the spray cans to cover it as it's such a small area.

I've used durabond minus the tape for repairing plaster cracks but I've never tried to finish a drywall joint without tape. I'm sure it would fair better than no tape with regular joint compound but I suspect it would still crack - sooner or later.
