Removing Wood Paneling

Hi,
We are just beginning to remove wood paneling. There is sheetrock under it which is what we want to paint. It looks like the paneling may have had some 'adhesive' in places probably to support it while it was nailed up. How can I clean off the 'adhesive' without damaging the sheetrock? With all the tiny nail holes having to be plastered, would it be better to just put up 1/4" drywall over the sheetrock in order to get a smooth surface for painting?
Thanks for any assistance.
Barbara

Welcome to the forums Barbara!

I doubt it's possible to remove all the adhesive without damaging the drywall. Sometimes getting the adhesive damp with paint thinner will help to loosen it up. Damaged drywall can be repaired. It would be hard to say [sight unseen] if overlaying with 1/4" drywall would be less work than repairing.

Thanks mark,
We'll wait till we remove all the paneling since hubby is going to reuse it to insulate his wood shop. Then we'll see which is the better way to go.
