Some advice needed

Hello All,

Im new to this forum so firstly let me introduce myself. My name is Greg and i am British but currently living in Hungary.

I would like some advice for the following problem.

We have been renovating a house for the past 2yrs and it is now ready to move into. We were planning to move into it at the beginning of March but have been told we should delay moving in until for a few months as the house is now cold (it is -10C outside at the moment) and if we were to move in and start heating straight away we would ruin the paintwork (which was done around 6months ago) and the house would become damp etc.

I was thinking we could gradually turn the temperature up slowly but was told this wouldnt be good either.

Any recommendations about what we should do?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums Greg!

First let me start by saying I know nothing about the environment where you live

I can't see where moving in and turning on the heat would be a problem. Generally an HVAC system will lower the humidity. What type of heat do you have? There is a lot of moisture involved in new construction [remodel should be similar], running the HVAC system or opening windows and using fans usually removes that moisture. I wouldn't think heat [maybe a dehumidifier if needed] would cause any issues with the paint.

What are they saying will happen to the paint if you move in now?

Hi GregD:

I'm assuming that you are not in the mountains. I've spent several weeks in Pest and thought the climate was similar to our midwest.

Minus 10C is about 14F. That's cold, but not unusual in the northern part of the US.

I've lived in several places where temperatures can go much lower and I've never heard that turning on the heat would ruin a paint job.

Maybe someone was thinking that the heat would cause the walls or woodwork to expand and crack the paint. I guess that might be possible, but I've never heard of it happening to the extent that you should delay moving. I'd just turn the heat up slowly a few days before I wanted to move in.

Maybe another forum member knows more than I do on this.

What the walls are made of and what type and/or how much insulation might be relevant
