Anchoring into a lathe and plaster ceiling

I recently bought a pot rack for my kitchen. It needs to be anchored into a ceiling joist or support. I have lathe and plaster in the walls and ceilings. How do I find that joist or support?

can you get to the space above the ceiling? If so drive a very small bit beside the joist and leave it in the hole for a marker. Hang the rack and pull out the bit.
