Bathroom Ceiling Finishes

Hi All,

Long time follower, first time poster! About a year and a half ago I purchased a 90 yr old home that's been subject to constant updating. I have a main bath without a ventilation fan, which has cause some damage to the ceiling leaving several cracks and paint peeling. I'm looking for an effective and inexpensive fix. I realize that if I simply paint over it, I will have the same problem within a year.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on textured wallpaper on the bathroom ceiling? I know it might not be ideal due to the humidity, but I will avoid seeing the imperfections in the ceiling.

Any thoughts suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forums

I don't think wallpaper would survive any longer than just paint.

Scrape the loose paint, fill the cracks with joint compound, sand smooth, prime and paint. Whether this will fail without taping the cracks is hard to know but as long as the reason it cracked goes away the cracks will probably stay away.

That said, you mentioned nothing about having fixed the lack of ventilation, have you done that? If not, there's not a lot of point putting any work into the ceiling.

I'd also be leery of wallpaper. Fix the ceiling as Mitch directed, prime and top coat with a good kitchen and bath enamel. Any bath rm with a shower needs to have enamel paint!

Installing an exhaust van would be best. Leaving the door open after a shower [window too if feasible] will help some. The quicker you can remove the steam the better.

What does the ceiling look like where the paint peeled? is there shiny paint under the peeled areas?

I think with out a ventilation fan, the ceiling will not get cracks, the cracks happens due to that is a old house. The peeling of a paint may causes due to moisture. Better go with semi gloss paint with oil based, so that you can clean the wall anytime. Instead of textured wallpaper go with the semi gloss oil based paint, or else contact your nearest local paint contractor for a better possible ways.
