Drywall height for drop ceiling

I'm planning on finishing my basement with drywall walls and a drop ceiling. Height from floor to joists is about 9'8" but to get the ceiling below pipes, ducts, etc. the ceiling will be at about 8'6". My question is should I use 10' drywall cut down to 9'8" to fully cover the wall or should I use 9' drywall and not worry about the gap as it will be hidden above the ceiling?

Just helped a customer track down what they thought might have been a mold smell. Turns out the builder stopped the drywall just above the drop ceiling leaving the cavities above the ceiling open to the insulation below. The insulation had turned into a rodent hotel, complete with indoor plumbing. What a smell. Not only do you need to enclose the cavities from the fron, you need then enclosed from the rear and sides. But that creates a closed air cavity that needs to breathe, so no VB and no water/moisture problems.
