Help identifying what ceiling material in old house is???

My daughter just bought a house in Atlanta that was built in the 50's. It had some additional remodeling done at some point but we don't know when. Anyway the question that I would like help with is to identify what the stuff is that is used for the ceiling in the upstairs.

I don't know if I can post a pic of it here or not so I will try to describe it and if you think you may know or if you want to see a pic I can email one to you.

It is about 2" thick. It is just layed in a box and beam type ceiling with one side of it showing as the ceiling and the other side is open to the attic space. The pieces are about 2' x 6' but some are differently size as to fit in smaller spaces.

It looks like a stranded type material that has been tightly baled together. The strands are shaped kind of like if you cut up a bunch of medium sized rubber bands. I don't know how else to explain it.

I am not even sure that I am in the correct forum for this question so any info or guidance to where I could find the answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
