Strapping Ceiling

The ceiling I'm installing on my 2nd floor (below attic) is going to be 2x8 joists with fiberglass insulation, covered with a 1/2" foil faced foam, then 1x3 strapping, then 5/8 rock.

Just trying to determine the best way to attach the strapping, I've heard of people using heavy duty staplers, which I don't have, but I was planning to do (2) ring shanked 8 penny 2.5" nails at each joist (16OC), is trying to get 2 nails at every joist begging for too much splitting? Probably overkill, I just like to play it safe. Would it be wiser to go with 1 at every joist and 2 on each end? I can drill pilots in each end as I know those tend to split if you just look at them wrong. But I don't want to pilot every single intersection :-)

I use a nailer and have no problem getting two nails per joist, including 4 at the butt joints. Hammering them in might be more of a problem, but pilot holes will work and won't add that much time. If the strapping is green enough, it won't be a problem. If it has dried a lot, it will split easily.

They also make a 1x4" strapping for metal roof applications. The stuff I have used is much better wood than the typical 1x3 they sell.

Thanks for the input. I'll be using a nailer, I'll look into the 1x4 stuff too. I'll give it a "shot" (pun intended) on the butt joints and if seeing too much splitting, will just shoot the rest and drill/hand nail the ends.
