painting over shellac?

I have a 90 year old house with a screened porch. It has a shellac ceiling. The last time I shellacked it, I ended up with a lot of it in my arm pit. I want to be able to see the wood, but am hoping that polyurethane or something else could be used. Oh, and some of the shellac is flaking off.

Welcome to the forums Sandy!

You'll need to sand the areas that are peeling [or scrub them with denatured alcohol] Oil base polyurethane can be applied over the shellac although I'm not sure that it would apply any easier. It may hold up better though.

As long as it was dewaxed shellac it shouldn't be a problem.
