For a backsplash you can use mastic/tile adhesive. Pro's would probably use thinset, just because they use it all day long, but in a non-wet area, mastic is fine. Make sure to use the correct sized notched trowel.

Vic, maybe.

Maybe mastic is ok. What kinda tile? If its stone, mastic can permanently stain some stone so thinset should be used. If the tile is larger than 8"x8" thinset should be used. If smaller ceramic tile, mastic is ok.

we are not sure on the tile but are leaning on stone 1x2 the granit has black, green, tan and gold. we are looking at a light tan subway tile with a alabaster grout. we did not know if we needed special adheaive on the wall so it did not slide down.

Well..I'm confused a bit...you said you were leaning towards stone...but then you are looking at subway tile? I think subway normally looks great and wouldn't draw away from the granite. You could probably put a nice thin accent in that would really work with the granite.

I would imagine trying to find a natural stone for the entire backsplash that compliments the counters might be a bit tough.

it is a natural stone in a small subway patern. we found tile that we really like and well probably not put a accent in it. we had one picked out but really like just the 1x2 tile.

Ahhh...I was confused by the terms. To me subway tile is about 2 x 6 and one solid color.
