Scraping Popcorn Ceiling and Concerned About Abestos
I'm wanting to remove the popcorn ceiling we have in the garage and bedroom.
Before I start I'm concerned whether or not the ceiling may contain asbestos. I have read that asbestos was banned in 1978 but up many homes built up to the late 80's may contain it. My home was built in 1991; could anyone shed some light on it for me and do they make testing kits or does it have to be tested by someone qualified in that area. Thanks for the help!

I don't know if they have test kits, or if you have to send a sample off
While anything is possible, it's highly unlikely that a house built in 1991 would have asbestos. Companies were allowed to use up their old stock of asbestos texture but that should have been gone by the early 80's.
Basically asbestos is only toxic when it's a dry airborne dust. Since you just about have to get it wet to remove it and if you contain and dispose of the debris properly - it isn't a big health hazard. I sprayed lots of it in the 70's and have no health issues related to it.
