stupid question (tape or mud first)

ok so i got rid of a wall and put dry wall up on ceiling (only 5" wide) now the stupid question, are you supposed to tape and then mud or mud a bit and then tape and then mud.

what if you have already tape would the mudding look bad?

Corner bead goes on the exterior corners, some tape the bead to the wall, others don't. I rarely ever tape the corner bead. The interior corners get taped. Apply a coat of j/c to each side, fold your tape and press it into the corner. Take a 3"-6" broad knife and smooth it out, removing any excess mud.

thanks for your response, so what you saying is that i should apply some mud first and then tape,

what if i have already tape before i mudded, can i go and mud anyways or should i remove the tape and start over again.

The only way you can apply the tape 1st is if you use the self adhesive 'sticky' tape. Sticky tape has a bad track record. About the only way to insure success over sticky tape is to apply a couple of coats of a hot mud like durabond or easy sand.

Paper tape is what you want to use and the mud is the adhesive which holds it in place

so i just want to say many thanks cause without your inputs i wouldn't even know where to start, so thanks and your help is very apriciated.

hi guys it's me again, i finished my job, i sprayed the ceiling with porcorn and it looks good (according to my wife) i think it looks good too , the only thing is the difference in color which i knew it would be different. this guy at home depot told me that i should paint the part of the ceiling that i spray so that the porcorn wouldn;t fall with time, is it really necesary to paint it, he said to use latex ceiling paint. i want to paint it anyways just so that it is all the same colour.

It is not necessary to paint it, it will stay up just fine. If you painted the entire ceiling it would all look the same.

Painting the popcorn texture will help protect it from moisture and will help it to last longer. It's always best to paint the the popcorn although leaving it unpainted would make removal easier if you were to decide you no longer wanted it.

Painting older popcorn that has never been painted can be tricky. If the old popcorn is degraded, the moisture in the latex paint can soften it up and cause it to come loose One way around this is to 1st apply an oil base primer - that will seal the popcorn. If you opt to skip the primer be sure you don't over roll the paint and don't go back over spots that didn't cover well, wait until the paint has dried before you touch up those areas.
