Best way to replace a section of drywall
I've got a wall that has moisture damage at the bottom. It needs six to twelve inches cut out and replaced. I know drywall has tapered edges but what about the piece thats already in the wall. Is there a method to taper that piece? Also what would be the best way to cut the damaged drywall out?

The drywall you cut out will only have been tapered at the bottom. Make sure you have the right thickness drywall [probably 1/2" but measure to be sure] and then tape and float out the joints about 12" or so and it shouldn't be noticeable.
A keyhole saw works good for cutting drywall but it can also be done with a utility knife - use a straightedge to help you keep the cut lined up.

Even if you take the old piece up to the joint you still have the existing edge that is not tapered because now it is finished so there will be an offset. Cut it where you need to and install a new piece . When you can put the tapered edge down.
If you have a lot of this think about a tool made for the job. Google Butt Taper or ButtTaper or some permutation. This tool is not cheap but it is effective for exactly what you want to do.
