Question Removing brush-texture from ceiling

Anyone know if a brush-textured ceiling can be refinished to a smooth finish? All ceilings in our 1970's build home have a textured ceiling which appear to have been made with a large (6-7" dia) brush being pushed up and down (sort of like an upside-down plunger motion). I'm guessing that the material is just a texture paint, but I'm not certain of that. I'd really rather have all flat, smooth-finish ceilings.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums

I'd skim coat with joint compound to smooth it, then prime and paint

It sounds like a stomp texture. It consists of thinned down j/c. Usually it's rolled on and then the design is stomped with a brush although some will just dob it on with the brush. You might try scraping it a little and see if that helps any. You'll need to skim coat either way but just not as thick if you can remove most of the texture.

Smile Sounds like a plan

Thanks, guys. Scraping sounds like a good first step... best to use a 5-in-1 painters tool, or broad blade putty knife???

I'd use a wide stiff knife. I doubt you can get one wider than 5"-6" that is stiff enough to be effective. A 5in1 will also work but a wider tool covers more ground [ceiling]
