Uneven Ceiling / Drywall What to do?

I am trying to open up my basement. There is a 2x4 wall that seperates my family room and hallway. After opening the wall from the family room side I realized that the ceiling in the family room is about 1" higher than the ceiling in the hallway.

I'm just curious if there are any tricks I can use to hide the 1" difference when it comes to putting in the drywall?

Welcome to the forums!

If neither ceiling has been drywalled yet, you can install furring strips to bring the higher ceiling down to the height of the lower ceiling.

Both ceilings are already drywalled.

How wide is the opening? are you trying to make it look like a bigger room? or is the hallway still a hallway?

We are trying to make the room bigger by taking out half of the hallway. The gap where there is no sheetrock is 3.5" basically just where the existing wall sits.

Well there aren't any tricks to hiding that joint. You'll either have to fur down the high ceiling and rehang the drywall or create an edge that doesn't look to bad. I'd suggest hanging the patch pieces at the same height as either the hall or original room and then get some corner bead to make a nice crisp line where the height change is. You'll want to check and make sure that one edge of the corner bead is short enough for this to work. They make different types of corner bead. One is just to cap off the end of the drywall, that may be the one you need to use.
