advice needed on punching a hole in a wall for a phone cord feed through

I have an wall to the outside, and need to put a hole (3/8") in it for a feed through. Looks like maybe a foot between outer side and interior side. Outer side is panelling, interior is 1/2" thick tongue and groove boards.

Normally, you'd use a long reach bit on this.

I don't have one, and the budget right now doesn't allow me to buy. No one around I can borrow one from.

Is there anything wrong with drilling out and inner holes in the same spot, on opposite sides, and pushing a welding rod through there? There is nothing in the wall that would be an obstacle. I can easily drill inner and outer holes. Might could go in a few inches with my standard bits.

Here's hoping........

That would work but you need to triple check your measurements!!

You're positive there is no electrical wires [or anything else] in the wall, right? masonry? 12" is pretty thick for a wood frame wall.

Drilling Deep Hole

Could you flatten the end of the welding rod and use the welding rod as a long drill bit for this one job?

Maybe. I can try it and see.

Nothing inside the walls. There's a cable from a pc going through right there (we live way out, and have only satellite pc). No other electrical cables nearby.

I've done this many times the bottom chord of a coat hanger or some straight # 9 or 8 wire or probably a welding rod will work too. Flatten one end with a hammer. It will widen it out in the process. Use a wire cutter and nip the flattened end so it comes to a point. That end will cut better than if you merely flatten it or flatten it and then put it on a grinder. Use this to go through the thickness then you have a marker for drilling from each side. If you are lucky the hole will be large enough (not likely) and you can pull the wire through as you withdraw the "bit".

Oh, and if the "bit" gets dull nip off a little more to sharpen it.
