fireplace tile
Hey everyone,
I am going to be re doing my gas fireplace. It once had a large slab of marble all around that i want to replace with stone slate tile. As you can see, there is a large area of black metal along with the drywall. some of the tiles will be half on half off but the tiles ontop will mostly be on metal. There is 3" on the sides and 7" on the top. How do i get them to stay? Will the mortar work on both metal and drywall?

Hi Tomas, I don't think you can apply tiles to the metal at all. It is part of the actual fireplace unit and will be expanding and contracting every time you use it. Even if it is a zero clearance insert, it will still heat up the existing fire box enough to pop the tiles. Slate tiles will look good with the black metal so why not just tile up to it and clean up the metal. You could use some hi temp paint to touch it up if needed.
Good Luck with it!

The only way to cover the metal part is to install a steel bridge forming a false wall over the fireplace. Than install a fireproof drywall sheet, forming the new fire place face and cover it with tiles.
