Acoustic sprayed ceilings

Just bought a South Western home that has a kitchen, dining & living room combined 780 sf and the Acoustics are terrible. Will a sprayed acoustic ceiling stop the echo?

It will help although personally I'd keep that to a last resort. Drapes, furniture and stuff that breaks up the sound transmission will help a lot. Have you moved in yet? empty houses are always noisy - nothing to absorb or break up the sound.

We have moved in and added furnishings but no great help. Thinking of an area rug under the dining table.

No carpet on the floor? A rug would help but carpet would help more - you want as much soft material in the room to absorb sound as possible, hard surfaces reflect sound.
