Removing beams from the ceiling?

I have a central beam that runs the length of my living room as well as some auxiliary beams that spread out from this central beam. I am concerned that the central beam is structural or that that the auxiliary beams may support this central beam.

I am getting ready to redo my ceilings (getting rid of the popcorn and adding new texture) so if the beams are going to come down I figure now is the time.

I am looking for any advice on how to determine the importance of the beams as well as any tips on how to affect their removal.

Thanks

Todd

Welcome to the forums Todd!

If the beams are solid wood [not 1xs mitered together] the odds increase that they are structural. What is directly above the ceiling? is there any attic space that you can view it from?

If you can't find visible joints or a series of finish nails on the edges, you might also be able to tell by drilling a couple of small holes. One in the middle of the width of the beam...and one closer to or angles toward the ceiling.

If you hit a hollow center in the width...and then it feels solid towards the ceiling...it's probably purely decorative.

First of all thanks for the welcome to the forum!

Second of all, thank you very much for replying to my thread.

The central beam is different (solid) then the other beams, and I am okay if I have to keep this as I could cover it with crown molding or something to that effect.

The supporting beams have visible nails on the side and the one in the kitchen has both the the main light and track lighting bolted to it.

I would be safe to assume that the side/supporting beams are likely just decorations.

A friend up mind also suggested that the central beam my have the power running through it. I have an attic and can (barely) get to the area above the central beam. Please let me know what I am looking for and I will report back.

Thank you again so much!

Basically all you need is a look see in the attic. If there is attic space above the ceiling and the attic/roof framing isn't connected to the beams - they're just decorative. If the framing is supported by the beams then most likely, it's structural.

Beams

Remove the light fixture to see how the fixture and ceiling box are installed. You should be able to see the type of structure around the edges of the ceiling box.

Also tap the beams lightly with a hammer to see if you get a hollow sound.
