Small ceiling fan drywall patch
When I originally installed my outlet box for my ceiling fan I didn't really do a good job. It's not level and when I tightened it , it took out some of the drywall. It's not a huge hole just kinda crumbled around the edges. We are fixing to redo our entire den and I want to redo it and hang the box level this time. So I guess my question is this..if I cut out just a say 1' x my joist spacing and screw a new piece in do I really have to tape and mud that. I was just going to mud it, patch the popcorn and prime and paint. Any help is appreciated.

Definitely use tape. It's cheap and it works and it really does not add much if any time to the repair so there is no reason not to. As Marksr mentioned without tape the seam will likely crack. Also, without tape you have a deep crack filled with mud which will dry slowly and shrink requiring extra coats to build up so going without tape may actually slow you down.
Have fun getting the popcorn texture to match. The only way I have ever been able to get a good match is to pull out the big gun and spray, making sure to feather out into the existing ceiling. It's a pain to set up the gun and clean up for a small repair. I've tried many times with the aerosol spray cans but can never get the size of the popcorn blobs to match. It's better than nothing but the different texture always shows right where the patch is located. Since you are re-doing the room have you considered scraping off the popcorn and going with a smooth finish in the whole room?

Thanks for response fellas...I did use a ceiling fan support kit but I had a few adult beverages and didn't get it as level as I should have.
I'm going to ditch that and use a 2 x 4 brace attached to the ceiling joist. Ok, I guess I will tape...I also thought about using the medallion but my wife not's hot on that idea. She says "you boogered it up..you fix it"..so you know what that means. And I did think about scraping the popcorn but decided against it. I have also tried the spray popcorn patch before it doesn't match up very well as you say. I did find something at Home Depot called Homex ceiling patch, it comes in a tube and it actually matches up pretty well for small repairs. You just squeeze it out of the tube and kinda smooth it out with your fingers to match existing..it actually works pretty well. So I will go with you guys advice and hope I get it right this time otherwise I will see this..
unish: Thanks for help gentlemen..I really appreciate it.
