attaching drywall greenboard to existing furling strips

Hey guys. I just got done taking down my bathroom ceiling which was stapled tile. My question is can i install 1/2 inch drywall greanboard to the existing furling strips. The furling strips are 3/4 inch. Will i be taking a chance of cracking the strips when i screw the ceiling up? Would course thread 1 and 1/4" screws work? I really don't want to take the strips down and will drill pilot holes if i have to.

Is there any space beyond the lattice, or is it a solid backing that will prevent screw penetration? Older wood will most likely split unless it is at least 3" wide or so, and it you hit the middle it may not tend to split as much. How wide are the strips?
