Smile New drywall joint problem

Hello, hung a drywall ceiling using the self adhesive tape, then I primed and top coated with a satin finsh. When paint dried I see the joint line. I tried sanding the tape and repainting, the seam is still visible. Should I sand again then apply joint compound ? ( will the compound adhere to the satin paint finish) Thank you, Al

Is it a little bulge? or do you see the outline of the tape?

Joint compound will adhere fine to the paint as long as you rough it up a little with sandpaper first.

Hi marksr thanks for the quick response. the visible line is only about 1/8", there was a slight buldge from the tape which I sanded off now I see the slight depression. I will resand and use some joint compound, how wide a strip should I sand ? Al

You need to sand how ever much you need to cover with j/c. Typically the joints where the factory bevel is are 10"-12" wide, a butt joint is closer to 2'

Once the repairs are done, don't forget the repair will need a primer. Enamels don't always touch up well but hopefully you won't need to repaint the entire ceiling.
