Soffit material

I will be installing drywall on my basement ceiling over the next few weeks and need to first box around the HVAC runs, I-beam and miscellaneous other plumbing. I have read through the forums on soffit building and generally come to the conclusion that soffit boxes constructed of 2x2, with 1x3 or 1x4 runners along the bottom are preferred.

Is my general assumption correct? Can 1x2 be used for soffit box construction with 1x3 runners along the bottom? Will this support 1/2" drywall?

Thanks in advance.

It will support the the drywall but it may split when you screw the drywall to it.
