Installing tounge and groove ceiling
We are currently converting a 24x24 steel pole barn into a heated workshop. The rafters were set 4' on center and the walls are 10' high. In discussing how to handle the ceiling, we decided we liked the look of the pine t&g and felt it would be strong enough to handle the 4 ft span with blown in insulation on top of it. Are we way off base? and if this can be done, I am guessing that I should be using screws to attach the boards? We were looking at what the local Menards calls "carsiding" in an 8" width.
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Welcome to the forums!
I'm a painter not a carpenter but I seriously doubt that the T&G will span 4' without sagging. Stayed tuned, I'm sure those with more experience will chime in later.

Mark's right. In order to install the T&G you will need to span across the exiting 4' span with dimension lumber in 2x. then apply the planks as 4' is too great a span for the lumber, especially with added weight on top of it.

Thanks! We're beginners at this and we we wanted to save the money for professional work on the house not the workshop. We'll put up stringers from 2x's as suggested and go from there. Thanks again!

I'm not sure exactly what type of T&G you intend to use or what your finishing plans are but if it's a smooth wood and you want to apply a finish to it - it's easiest/quickest to stain and poly it before installation. Just be sure you don't get a build up of poly or runs on the T&G part, that might hinder installation.
