What is this? Reddish Brown Plaster Walls?
I was hoping to find some old brick behind my walls that I wanted to expose so I started with the bump out for the boiler. First there was some drywall then a reddish-brown mud type layer and then brick. I thought since there is brick here the whole wall should be brick but when I started making another hold on the wall next to the bump out this is all i found. It seems to be about 3 inches thick then there is nothing behind it. I know something has to be there but I don't want to end up drilling a hole into my neighbors house. What is this stuff?? This is the wall between a rowhome.
thanks...Dan

Remember Edgar Allen Poe's "Telltale Heart"?
Shine a light in there and tell us what you see.
The first Pic is drywall over gypsum plaster over the brick.
For the other two clean the dust out of the hole and look around and see if there are mortar joints. I think you have soft brick but I can't say for sure. There is probably a wall like it some inches back. This could also be a chase for plumbing, HVAC and electrical.
Show us some pictures after you clean the hole and tell us what is back there. It might take a long stick to find it.
This might be a site of anthropological or forensic significance.
