Walk IN Bathroom shower tile repair

I have three walls 41/4" tiles approx 70" H with a shower pan. A problem has developed with maybe the bottom 2 rows because the tiles were mounted a drywall product rather than a cement board. My son says to tear it down from top to bottom and install the cement board. Is it possible to cut & remove, let say the bottom 3 rows, then install the cement board to install new tiles? Thanks, Bob

Bob, bite the bullet, do it right. You should be proud your son has that foresight. You can build it better.

Gut it and do it right as chandler suggests. You will not have to worry about it for 10 + years. What you describe you will be patching it continuously.
