When to use coarse vs fine sheetrock screws?

Getting ready to put up 1/2" sheetrock (interior walls, not garage), attaching to wood 2x4 studs. Should I use coarse or fine sheetrock screws? Is 1 1/4" length ok or should I use longer screws. Code here says one screw every 12", along each stud. Think I should put up top sheet butted up to ceiling first and work my way down. Is this correct? Any thoughts on using sticky mesh tape instead of paper tape (I don't mind the extra cost if it will make the job easier/better) Thanks!

Coarse thread is for wood, fine thread is for metal. 1.25" is ok but 1.5" is better. It's best to hang the walls horizontally. It helps to eliminate any discrepancies in the framing and makes finishing easier - no bending up and down every 4' Mesh tape has a bad track record. If you use it, you need to apply a setting compound like durabond over it. IMO paper tape is the best way to go.

Course screws are for wood studs, fine screws are for metal studs. Paper tape is generally considered to be superior to mesh tape although the mesh is slightly easier to use.

I see that Mark beat me to the post.

@ marksr & Furd - - Thanks for the quick responses. It's been years since I did any sheetrocking and I'm hoping it comes back quickly.... before I make too much of a mess.....
