My 20X12 FR ceiling (1/2" drywall on 24" center trusses) is sagging.
I have decided this is the first part of the room renovation.
I was thinking that I could secure 2X4 stringers across the trusses on 24" or 16" centers and then re-drywall with the newer 1/2" high strength drywall (or the 5/8 stuff).
Now, however, a friend says that I should secure my 2x4's directly to the trusses, running the same direction, not perpendicular to them.
What say the experts here?

Don't know how you would secure them to the trusses if they were running in the same direction. You could, as you say, remove the sheetrock, install perlins flat at 16" centers and resheetrock the ceiling. Then you could use 1/2". Otherwise 5/8" would be the norm. Putting them on the flat will make for an easier install.

I'd leave the structure as is and just use 5/8" rock.
What would running 2x4s parallel to the trusses do anyway? The only thing I see that accomplishing is lowering the ceiling.

Sagging Ceiling
My thought was to not remove the old sagging drywall (more work than I choose to attempt.
With the 2x4's secured flat across the truss members on 16" centers, I thought that would be support for the old sheetrock and take our some of the sag as well as provide sufficient support for 1/2 new drywall. I'm not concerned about the loss of 2" of ceiling height.
No ??

Don't strap the joisting. As Mitch says, you will lose ceiling height. Remove the sheetrock, insert perlins flush with the trusses, across the grain, then reinstall sheetrock. I doubt you will draw old sheetrock back into flatness if it has memory set in.
