Painting 'smooth' walls ?

Our bathroom has wallboard that's smooth & shiny.( I don't know what that type of wallboard is really called). Question is, can one paint it ? If so, what kind of paint, & should I use primer ?
Thanks !

Welcome to the forums.

Is there a finish on this now?

We may need some pictures.

Welcome to the forums!

Are the walls drywall or something else? Is it painted now? More than likely it's paintable but we need to figure out what it is first.
maybe a pic or two might help - http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html
