Painting 'smooth' walls ?

Our bathroom has wallboard that's smooth & shiny.( I don't know what that type of wallboard is really called). Question is, can one paint it ? If so, what kind of paint, & should I use primer ?

Are the walls drywall or something else? Is it painted now? More than likely it's paintable but we need to figure out what it is first.

Exposed old brick and now left with ammonia smell

I just took down old plaster covering a chimmey (there had been a leak) and now a terrible ammonia smell is coming from the brick/morter. I haven't finished scraping or cleaning the bricks but now I wonder if I should not keep the exposed brick and cover it up with drywall again. I like the exposed brick but the smell is terrible. It's been 2 days and it still remains. Any advice/thoughts about getting rid of the smell?

We moved into a house about a year ago and when we moved in we noticed a couple of drywall tape bubbles. The one I am going to try and fix first is about 2 inches long and maybe a half inch wide. It's on the ceiling, very close the molding. The tape has obviously been painted and I am wondering the best way to fix. We're getting ready to paint the whole room (ceiling and all) anyway, so I'm not over concerned about the unfinished look, but I want to make sure if looks good after we repaint. Thanks.
