T&G pine install over sheet rock and furring strips
Hello,
I think I have read all the posts of T&G, but have not seen on with my issue. I have a finished ceiling with furring strips perpendicular to joists underneath the sheetrock (which I did not realize at first).
My issue is that I originally planned to nail the T&G through the sheetrock with 2.5" finish nails into the joists. Once I found the furring strips, I was concerned that shooting a 2.5" nail through the tongue, sheetrock, and the furring strip would not leave me enough nail to get into the joist.
My question is should I tear down the drywall (excellent condition) and take off the furring strips, then nail the T&G directly to the joists (shimming when needed)? Or, can I just nail into the sheetrock and furring strip and call it a day?

If you remove the sheet rock & furring strips, what type of work will that create on the walls? You'll be raising the height around an inch. Will that inch match what's currently seen? I wouldn't remove anything.

..... and if there is insulation above the drywall you could have a big mess to deal with
If the furring strips are well secured to the rafters/joists, it shouldn't be necessary to secure the T&G to the joist.
btw - welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the advice. I didn't even consider the walls (glad I didn't punch any holes). The only challenge for the furring strips is that they are going in the same direction as my T&G will (parallel). I guess I'll just have to find the intersections of the furring strip and joist and nail there. I know joists are 16" off center, is there a standard for furring strips?
Thanks.
Thanks.
