Ceramic wall tile

I have old 1950's style tile on half my bathroom wall. I would like to install new ceramic tile ( which I have done before). My question is can you place new tile over old tile?

With all due respect, there ain't no way I would tile over existing 1950's tile. First, it was put up over sheetrock, which is a poor substrate, and could have mold and water damage at some point. Second, the new tile would protrude proud of the old tile making trim a bear, as well as the water supply fixtures needing to be extended, possibly.

Might work, might not - IMO, not worth the risk and I would remove the old tile first.
