I want to paint our kitchen walls. I have removed the wallpaper and scrubbed off the paste. In some areas the walls are uneven where primer came off with the paper exposing the wallboard. How can I make the walls smooth for painting? Can a do-it-yourselfer float the walls or should I call in a professional?

No, I don't think you need a professional for this. First try treating this the same as a painter would. Spot prime first, even two or three times if necessary. If this dosn't work, try filling with joint compound and level by sanding.
