Painting over marlite walls
The walls in the kitchen of this house are very ugly, dirty marlite wall panels. I have cleaned them but they still look awful. I would like to paint these. Is this possible? Also, if painting is possible, there are "stips" that "connect" each board together. If I take those down, what would I fill them in with? Thanks for any help or advise.

Those strips are what's holding up the butt joints.
Why not just remove it and sheetrock the walls, or at least knock the strips off and go over the wall with 1/4 sheetrock?

IMO, removing the strips, patching and then painting usually looks worse than the strips themselves. I'd leave the strips, prime with a pigmented shellac like Zinnser's BIN and then apply a couple of coats of a quality latex enamel.

I am trying to get this done as soon as possible. (and sorry, being female, I dont think I could do new sheetrock) Should I sand the walls down first? And thanks so much for your replies and advice!!
