Opening up washer/dryer area

House originally had the typical enclosure with two bi-fold doors for the laundry area and previous owner has things all jacked up, so we're slowly making things our own. My goal is to knock down the enclosure, have the ceiling from the hallway continue into the new area. Eventually there will be cabinets installed and the new washer/dryer will have some sort of door or enclosure similar to one attached photo.. My concern, can I cut the top 2x4? My plan was to remove the studs up to the doubles and move the doubles to match the inner area of the laundry area, attic is just above. Thanks!

It's not a supposting wall so it all can be taken down.
Just going to be stuck with having to fix the floor and ceiling.

The finished pic looks nice but I bet servicing the back of the washer/dryer is a bear .... I wonder if they have any access from behind?

My floor will be continued into the area (hardwood) but I don't plan on surrounding the machines to be as enclosed. Thanks for the help
