Texturing over painted paneling?

My brother in law has that ugly paneling in all the rooms in his house....last year he decided he wanted it painted so we primed & painted over the paneling with just basic interior flat paint. Well now he's decided he wants to texture over the paneling. I really don't even know how to begin with this project. will i need to strip the paint? can i texture just right on top of that? any help is appriceated!

Welcome to the forums!

Texture will adhere to flat paint but the big question is how well is the paint adhered to the paneling. What type of prep and primer did you use?

Tell me you used an oil based primer over the paneling before the paint. If not, I would sand it down and start over with that as the coat immediately on top of the wood.

If there is any movement at all in the paneling, your texture will fail. At the very least, you will see not only the vertical stripes but the seams between each panel as well. I would recommend against wasting your time and look toward other solutions.
