What grit sandpaper should I use? Any other helpful hints to insure a quality job will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If it's Spackle, and not sheetrock mud, start with about a 120 grit paper using a light pressure. If that seems to be polishing more than sanding, go to an 80 grit. If you actually used a topping or a joint compound, then 36 grit works just fine.
