Mildew on dresser in closet

I have a large walk-in closet in my master bedroom. If I put leather shoes in there, they get mildew. There is some mildew in the wood on my dresser as well but when I check the clothes they look clean and the clothes hanging nearby look fine as well. I've got one of those dri-packs in there and I change it about once every 2 weeks. How do I get rid of the mildew permanently? Would opening the window help?

You need more air circulation in the closet! An HVAC vent would be ideal, leaving the door open might help.

I think you're right. However, I have a vent in there, and our AC runs about 8 hours a day. Is that enough?

Are clothes or other items restricting the air flow? Is there an adequate volume of air coming out of the vent? Normally if the HVAC is turned on [not necessarily running] 24 hrs a day, there aren't any humidity issues. While opening a window will provide more ventilation, it also tends to let in more humidity. Mold/mildew needs both moisture and heat to grow.
