Basement Ceiling in 2' x 2' tin panels

Good Morning,

My wife and I are at a stand still. We would like to put 2x2 tin ceiling tiles up on the future mancave. The tile are of the nail up variety complete with filler panels for around the edges of the rooms and cornice. The ceiling is 91" from floor to bottom of joist and the joist are 16" OC. The tile must be nailed every 6". We are sure furring strips should be used. My question is; should I build a grid out of 2"x 2" furring then move it up and attach to joist or place some kind of blocking between the joist(flush)?Name: DSC_1104resize.jpg

I would use 1X3 furring (much cheaper and a wider nailing target if your spacing runs off a little) and keep it flush with the joists because it's such a low ceiling to begin with. It's gonna take a lot of cutting, blocking and fitting to make it work though. The tin ceilings I have installed were 2X8 panels on much higher plaster ceilings.

Some guys I talked to said to put 3/8 OSB up. I know that would cut down the amount of work, but still access above the joist would be great. If not I would have to remove the panels and cut or remove the substrate. May not be an issue now in a 4 year old home, but in the future????

We did one not too long ago for a client and installed it in a grid ceiling, leaving access to all above intact. It looked fine. You can put the grids right up to the joists since the panels are so thin. We just had to install grid clips to keep the panels from lifting out when doors were left open or high winds were around.
