Drywall mud over studs
I have a door frame made of two adjacent 2X6's that the old owner converted to built-in bookshelves. His shelves went to the floor, but I want to run drywall across the bottom so the shelves stop about a foot above the floor. The 2X6s come flush with the front of the drywall (roughly flush--maybe recessed 1/8" or so). I thought of trying to notch the 2X6s so I could run drywall flush across, but I was hoping there might be some kind of paperboard or something I could tape to the drywall on either side of the 2X6s and then mud across to give it the appearance of flush drywall across without having to cut the wood. Or any other suggestions? Attached is a photo of one side (it's just like that on the other side).

Why try and notch it? What prevents you from removing the 2x6, and replacing/moving it? Replace with 2x4's set farther back if needed.

That's a great question, and that was my initial plan, but those boards are pinned in pretty good by that 2X2 frame in the back (by many nails), and the drywall on the other side is nailed to that 2X2 frame. Plus there is wiring through that frame, so it finally just seemed easier not to disrupt it all. Maybe I should revisit that plan though if there's not an easy way to disguise the wood.

You would use a reciprocating saw (sawzall) to cut the nails loose and free the wood up. I can't see any wiring going through that 2x6 on the corner in your picture.
