Hanging drywall over textured ceiling & fluorescent lights
Hi everyone,
Planning a basement project to remove old wood paneling and hang drywall as well as remove old fluorescent lighting and dry walling over textured ceiling.
I have researched a little bit but cannot find anything regarding the best way to go about installing drywall over these recessed lights. Would I have to strap just the opening after taking them out to make the ceiling even to go over or strap the whole ceiling?
Thanks in advance.

Not sure I understand
are you just patching the holes in the ceiling or hanging a whole new ceiling?
How wide is the recessed area? To patch, you'd just add framing as needed to install the patch piece to. If you are drywalling the entire ceiling, you can just go over the recessed area .... unless it's too wide [then add framing as needed]

Thanks for the reply. I don't want the textured ceiling so I guess I'm looking at patching the holes from the lighting then drywalling over.
Would I just put 1x3 straps in the opening to make it flush with the rest of the ceiling then do the whole ceiling?

That will work as long as the gap left by the recessed lights isn't too wide. What type of texture does the ceiling have? Scraping the texture and skim coating the ceiling might be less work than hanging/finishing new drywall.
