Hardieplank instead of Drywall?

I was thinking of using hardieplank for my ceiling instead of drywall. I first want to make sure this isn't a completely crazy idea (seen a few video's of people doing it and recommending it), but second i'm curious about the joints. Since i'm not going to be able to flashing metal all over the place, what's the best solution?

Provided I do this the ceiling is going to have a popcorn paint to it so whatever I do I just want to make sure that the cracks won't show and has minimal bowing.

I sure would like to know the reasoning behind this move. Hardieplank is only as strong as your framing and is super heavy and brittle. And, yes, what will you do with the joints. Why not go conventional and use drywall. You do not want to use popcorn as a ceiling finish. Cracks, if not properly prepared will show through anything you apply over them.

I don't understand the reasoning either and would think you'd want to skim coat the cement board [after taping the joints] in order to get a nice paintable substrate. Why don't you want to use drywall?

My guess is the OP wants to use 4'x8' hardi panels for a porch ceiling installation. It was the only video I could find on short order that was both Hardi and Ceiling.

Yeah, they do mention flashing so I'd have to assume this is outdoors or on a porch ceiling. When they mentioned popcorn though, that was kind of different. Never seen popcorn texture on a porch ceiling.

I painted a lot of new houses in fla back in the 80's that had popcorn drywall porch ceilings. If the texture wasn't painted, the popcorn started failing off in a year or two. Even painted, it wasn't something I'd want on my own home.

The more I think about it, what a terrible idea for a finish on a porch ceiling. Cobwebs, etc. would clutter the thing up in no time. Not that it's a great idea indoors either in my opinion, but outdoors... No.
