patio ceiling ?

I have a sheet rock ceiling on my patio in hot humid Florida. as one would expect, after many years paint is starting to peel and joint tape is coming undone (area 21' x 9'). As a more permanent solution I have considered trying to put solid soffit panels or 4' x 8' plastic wall panel sheets up over the mess but that does not look particularly eye appealing though probably the easiest fix. I'd like to keep from lowering the ceiling as much as possible with the installation. Any one have suggestions or experience with this as I haven't done a repair like this before.

A picture would be nice.
I've done dozens with beaded soffit and vinyl cove moulding made just for it.

I just hate when I see 4 X 8 sheets used, or real wood. Just a whole lot more long mantaince.

I'd first install 1 X 4's to have something to attach the cove and soffit to at right angles to the joist.
Then install this trim along the outside borders, then just nail up the soffit material.
It's under functional trim item # 56901.

Thank you for the info. It doesn't sound too complicated. any recommendation on size /type nail or should I use screws to attach the 1x4, trim and soffit?

8D ring shanks for the 1 X 4's.
1-1/4 galvanized roofing nails for the rest.
Going to have to go to a real siding supply to find this stuff.

Thank you for the details. Can I just attach the soffiting through the sheet rock into the wood beams that the sheet rock is attached to or is it necessary to use 1x4's?

Sheet rock has no holding power.
The rafters are running the wrong way so you need the 1X running at right angles. But make sure to run them along the outsides first so there's some place to attach the cove to.
The fastest way to cut the panels is by setting up some saw horses and laying a piece of plywood on them and using a plywood blade on backwards in a ciruler saw.
Do not nail the panels tight, they need room to expand and contract. That's why there's elongated holes.
Do not face nail them.
When running the cove do not just butt the joints. You cut out the back side on one of the pieces and side it into the next piece so as it expands and contracts no gaps open up.
