Post Attaching strapping to ceiling joists

I would like to use an air compressor stapler gun to attach strapping rather than nails. Will this be strong enough to hold 1/2 inch drywall?

I have all sizes but I was planning on using 1 3/4 inch for 3/4 inch strapping

That size in narrow crown would work fine. Rule is that more than half of your fastener must go into the wood you are fastening to.

I have always used the +1 rule.... fastener should penetrate a minimum of 1" into framing. Practically the same thing.

Only place not to do that is when fastening to a pocket door. Yikes!
