I removed my 1970s panels and the drywall behind has glue, nails, and is not taped everywhere. To me it looks bad and I wonder what method is "best" to get ready for paint. Seems I have three options. 1) Remove all drywall and rehang with 1/2in. 2) Repair/re-skim existing 3) hang new 1/4in over the top of the old 1/2 in. I am a novice at this though am fairly handy at other things. I attached a picture of the walls to show what I am up against. I am leaning toward hanging new 1/4in but am not so sure. I think removing and replacing is not a good idea at all though. If I hang new 1/4in over the old will it be somewhat weak? Easily breakable? How best to hang new? Do I need to screw it in and find studs or can I use drywall compound to effectively glue it to existing without screwing? Thanks for the advice!

Hi, I am planing on replacing my access door to the attic for a long time. Not surprisingly the condition of the piece of the drywall that is used as a door/hatch is pretty much - dead. Initially was thinking to replace it with a piece of plywood, so it survives my constant visits to the attic. All my internet hardware is located there so I go there pretty often :( I was thinking that I was been smart placing all of the hardware and cables in the attic, Bad Idea... After looking at plywood option I realized that I probably will never be able to make it look like the rest of the ceiling becasue the texture will not stick to plywood as well as it will to the piece of a drywall. Any suggestions on how to approach this? Should I make a sandwich of thin plywood & drywall? Should I use the corner bead for drywall to "keep it together"? Also want to insulate the hatch somehow to seal the drafts.
