How do I replace a couple of tiles in thick set mortar?

I have a 100+ year old home that has thick set (2 in or so) cement on wire mesh as a backing for the tile wall in the shower. I had to knock out a couple of them and I want to fill the hole in with new tile, but the old tiles wont chip off in whole pieces. I have to use so much force to remove a single tile that every time it damages the one next to it. I'm not able to replace the whole wall at this point, so I'm hoping someone has some advice for how to patch this hole without replacing the whole thing.

I thought maybe I could use a masonry blade on my circular saw to make clean cuts all the way through along the grout lines. Could still be tricky to not damage the adjacent tile but its the best thing I've thought of so far. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Ben

Welcome to the forums Ben!

A little out of my area of expertise but I'd think a 4" grinder with a cut off wheel or something like a Fein MultiMaster would be a better choice than a skil saw. You definitely want to cut the joint along the next good tile ..... or you'll wind up doing the whole wall.

There is also a blade for a sawsall for cutting grout lines. I have used it and it is fairly easy to control and does the job.
