Indented Nail/Screw pop in ceiling?
Hi All -
So, I've started noticing what looks like very shallow indentations regularly spaced on one section of the ceiling on my second floor. I'm familiar with nail pops but these almost look like screw heads being pulled through the drywall?
It's only one section of the ceiling (which coincides location-wise with the hallways on the floor above). I've tried to push up to see if the ceiling is loose and I couldn't (hardly definitive, of course) and I see no water damage that could be putting undue stress on the drywall.
I've attached a few pics.
1. They seem to align to the joists - Any idea what happened here?
2. Is this something to be concerned about?
3. What's the recommendation? Patch over the indentation or put in new screws then standard patching?
Thanks in advance for the help! I really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Greg

Thanks for the quick reply, Norm201.
So, I didn't notice it in the winter but in all fairness i wasn't really looking. I had a restoration guy out to fix something else and he took a look, confirmed no moisture up there and said it looked like nothing to worry about.
High spots? You mean one of those indented areas?
Thanks,
Greg

The correct way to fix them is to drive the nail/screw back in and then set another screw next to it [the 2nd screw will hold better] You would then mud, texture and prime/paint the repair. Generally nail pops on a ceiling are cause by the ceiling joists being on 24" centers, not enough nails/screws along with the weight of the insulation. It is not something you need to be overly concerned about!

Just to be clear (no offense to the other guys) but these aren't high spots are they? From what you said it seems like they are dimples, sort of like a new wall looks before the screw heads are mudded?
The screw heads aren't above the surface, but look like they were maybe over driven?
I think the repairs will be different if you clarify that point...

Hi Gunguy45 -
Thanks for chiming in!
Yes, they are indeed dimples following the description you provided. They look like little indentations in the ceiling where the screw is. At first I thought there could be something pulling down the ceiling and the screw is being driven through the drywall but I see no evidence of water damage and the ceiling appears solid - meaning I can't push it up or anything.
Is the repair different or even worth driving new screws in?
Thanks again for the reply!

That is the limit of my knowledge. I'm a good reader...lol.
I know how to do nail and screw pops as described...but dunno how you'd fix this exactly.

It's where the weight of the ceiling [and/or insulation] has pulled the drywall down a little. I forgot to mention
that if the drywall can be pushed up any, you should do so as you install new screws. A piece of wood can be helpful to push against the drywall to spread the pressure so you don't damage the drywall.
Vic, thanks for keeping us straight
