Drywall alternatives for Ceiling

Hi, our house was originally just a manufactured home, and then had subsequent add-ons attached to all 4 sides, so it is a stick built around a manufactured home. I have removed the ceiling in a part of the manufactured home area, to replace the insulation, and found that the original manufactured home roof is supported by just 2x2s. (There is a normal roof above it, built correctly).

From what I have read, drywall may be too heavy for these 2x2s to support. The ceiling that was ripped out was a very old, foam type material, similar to a drop ceiling. We do not wish to use this again. There will be insulation placed on top of this new ceiling. I thought of maybe using 1/4 drywall, but read that it can sag. Any suggestions for another type of material to use for a ceiling?

I wonder whether the lightweight sheetrock might be ok? Prob not, it's not THAT much lighter.

Any way to beef up or add to what you have?

Couple of guys here know about manufactured/mobile homes so they may have some suggestions.

Hang in there.

My house is built around an older single wide MH. Mine [like many] has a truss system built out of 1x2s. What I did to reinforce it so I could hang 1/2 drywall was to nail a 1x4 along the side of each truss. That stiffens it up enough so it can support the drywall. You do have to notch the ends of the 1x4 to make them fit. I did use new 2x4 ceiling joists in a few areas but mostly reinforced what was there because it was easier. Most of the work was done 15+ yrs ago and the ceilings still look good.

Took a look yesterday and I do believe I can do some reinforcing with a few 2x4s and make the drywall work, thanks all.
