Can I drywall my ceiling without taking down paneling on walls?

My husband has done some light construction a long time ago, but has never put up drywall. We bought our house last year because of the space and potential it has. At the top of our Reno list is drywalling the whole house (it has paneling on walls and old ceiling tiles). We plan on drywalling in March of next year. My husband works out of state and is only home for 2 days out of the week (sometimes not even that). I considered hiring someone to put up the drywall, since I want it all done in one swoop and not broken up between weeks, until I found out that our ceiling tile may contain asbestos. I now have to hire someone to come and test it for asbestos first, and if it is...we have to pay a pretty penny to have them remove it. After paying them, we won't have it in our budget to finish our walls. So I am wondering if we can drywall our ceiling without having to take down our paneling on the walls. We could do our walls the following year. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums! Although it looks better to have the wall sheetrock hold up the ceiling edges, you can install the ceiling independent of the walls. You plan on sheetrocking the walls eventually, so the problem will solve itself at that time. In the meantime, the edges of the sheetrock ceiling and the paneling will not be perfect, so you need to plan on either installing a 2 1/2" crown molding to hide the cracks or live with it until you can install the walls and properly tape the joint and finish with compound. Make sense??

Why do you suspect asbestos in your ceiling tiles? Can they be removed without making a mess (releasing harmful dust)?

Thanks for the info! I don't mind about the look as long as I can get the rest of it done soon! And I suspected the asbestos because this house was built in 1969. I just wanted to know if it contained asbestos BEFORE we tore it down. I searched it, and the tiles of that time that contained asbestos looks just like ours. It may not contain asbestos, but we have a baby, and I don't want to buy or rent suits and masks. And I'm not sure what to do to contain the dust, so I would rather have someone specialized in asbestos abatement. If it doesn't contain asbestos, then we will have enough money to drywall our walls also. I just wanted to make sure we could do the ceilings without the walls, just in case!
